White Lilac – a historical novella

White Lilac was the first novel I wrote, and the reason I have never published it is because it is very short – just 45,000 words. But, despite its smallish size, just completing it gave me a huge boost of satisfaction and confidence. Once you have passed the goal post of completing one novel, then you can go on to write another one, knowing that it’s possible!

White Lilac is mainly set in the 90s, but has flashbacks to the late Victorian period. The main character is Rachel, who moves into a flat where an old portrait painting starts to have a strange effect on her. She begins to research the woman in the painting, and finds more than she bargained for. She discovers more about herself, and also her relationship with her fiancée, David. Through the diaries of the Victorian woman, we also learn her tragic story. Both women are involved in a love triangle -but how will both stories end?

The story involves one of the main themes in much of my writing – how the past can effect the present, and the possibility of communications between ourselves and our ancestors.
Recently, I went over it and did a bit of editing, and decided to offer it up as a free novella, exclusively to those who sign up for my newsletters.
